Training plans for next year

I have been reading through Arnie Baker’s book, Altitude Climbing Endurance Training, which is written by a guy who more or less specializes in training for the Death Ride. (Well, okay, he also coaches Olympic athletes and other rabble :), but he wrote an entire friggin’ book about training for the Death Ride.) I think I will strike out on my own next year, and train following his advice. This year I’m in good enough shape to follow his training regimen; last year I really wasn’t. It’s a pretty tough training plan, though, so I’m thinking carefully about whether I want to put in that much effort. I don’t want to burn out on cycling, and I do want to have time for some of my other hobbies.

I too enjoyed the DR 2007 and plan to ride it again. 3000 riders, roads closed for 4 passes, lots of good food and enthusiasm. I did make a short video of the ride:

We all stay focused and watch out for each other. I heard of one bad accident on Ebbetts and the rider is still not recovered. Does anyone know what happened?

I heard the injured victim just seemed to fall down. There were lots of rumors about how, from passing out to hitting a pot hole and losing control. I was at the bottom of Ebbets (west side) when the emergency call came in over the ride radio net. An ambulance was there in short order and helicopter flew in as I was ascending back to Ebbets pass. The bike was still sitting at the scene as I rode bye.

Nice video Mark….kind of gutsy to film on descents, next year you will have to try filming the tight curves of the Ebbetts descent !

Tien, I have read the book you purchased. Pretty good ideas. What I found that worked pretty well was to find some courses around the area that sort of match the training approach. In the end however it is just time on the saddle climbing, climbing, climbing. And, dropping my body fat to 10% really helped my climb rate, not an easy task.
