I am now at the 6-yard mark (no trace of boredom so far), and have started sewing up the first muslin. I’m also in the midst of dyeing the second batch of weft yarn, about 2.5 pounds in this batch (1200 g), in a VERY big stockpot. Not bad progress considering that work is still in panic mode and I therefore have to work in “stolen moments”. (Well, except for today, when I did get a good chunk of time to work on my own projects.)
Just to add to the festivities, Mike and I have decided to move. We’re currently about 40-50 miles north of Mike’s new job, which is in Sunnyvale. This makes his commute about an hour each way in good traffic and more frequently an hour and a half, which is just too long. I’ve wanted to move south to the Peninsula for awhile, so moving closer to Mike’s work is fine by me. So we spent this morning checking out a duplex in Mountain View, and if our rental application is accepted, we could be moving in three weeks or so (just after Phase I of my project at work is released).
I’m pretty excited about this potential place – it’s 1250 square feet (according to the landlord), which is nothing short of miraculous! It’s got a big front yard with a large orange tree, and a fenced backyard with an apple tree. There are two bedrooms, one of which would be an office/craft/weaving room, a HUGE living/dining room, a fairly decent kitchen, a garage with lots of storage space, AND an outdoor, sheltered area that I could use for dyeing!
So I am pretty happy about that. We’ll find out tomorrow sometime whether we got the place, if not it’s no big deal – we’ll just keep looking. I saw a few promising places on Craigslist earlier this weekend, so we can check them out in a week or two if this place doesn’t pan out. The rental market here, as elsewhere, is pretty depressed so there are a lot of good places available.
Of course, this just adds to my workload and stress level. My AVL Workshop Dobby Loom is only technically portable, and while it can theoretically be disassembled and reassembled with the warp still on it, I’d prefer to move it when I reach a natural “break” in the weaving. I think I’ll have that “break” in about 3 more yards, when I switch to the second lot of dyed weft – so I should reach that point well before I have to start packing. Nonetheless I am a bit stressed – so much to do, and so little time! Work will be a little better but still be extremely busy/high-pressure while we’re moving. I just hope I manage to hang onto my sanity through the process.
Moving! Now that’s exciting.
The potential new place sounds gorgeous — reminds me of my days in Santa Clara/Sunnyvale/San Jose rentals fondly 🙂
