Dyerslist poll

Hi all,

In hopes of resolving the discussion on Dyerslist reasonably peacefully, I’ve set up a poll where people can vote for their side of the discussion.  I’ll leave the poll open for a week, then report back the results – hopefully we can all live with the majority vote.

If you’d like to discuss or expound your point of view, please leave a comment on this page. This will let us discuss without cluttering up Dyerslist with me-too posts.  Comments are moderated, but I’ll approve anything that isn’t robot spam, so please feel free to post.

If we vote for #2, we are changing the direction of the list as was originally intended according to the mission statement. I really think that unless #2 wins by a huge margin, making that change would be a big mistake because this list would then simply be another dye-happy list. Nothing wrong with the dye-happy list; it is just that I wonder if we really need two of them.

Whatever the result, explicit details should be in the subject line. If it is ‘new pictures of dyed stuff on my blog’ then people can delete without reading the post. Someone on this or another list once commented ‘the readers of this list are the least likely to become customers.’ This was in the context of a ‘why do we have to see links to blogs’ discussion.
Thanks for the off-list forum, Tien.

I have been dyeing for 30+ years. Have long since left MX behind, then H, then finally Lanasets, and now am working with disperse dyes. I don’t read everything everyone posts – but I am glad they do it anyway. That is the point – to have a wide enough group so people can ask and teach and learn. (Hooray for one of the strengths of the internet. This list provides a back yard fence with lots of dyers leaning on it ready to chat.) Now and then I pick up something new to me when I am scanning the list, and sometimes I can pass on something I have learned. Mostly I don’t go look at blogs – but now and then I do. I like it that people can post a blog or web address where I can see some of their work – especially if it’s tied in with information about how they did it. Primarily, the list should be technical, for new dyers as well as experienced – but directions to where we might see a piece being discussed can be valuable. I hope that isn’t excluded from the list.

A picture is worth a 1000 words. While I value the text information in the list, I REALLY value seeing examples. I have always felt the dyerslist wasn’t taking advantage of the progress and innovation that the internet offers. It is like looking at something only in black and white when we could look at it in colour too. A link to a blog is a bonus. A reference to weather in Florida is a distraction.

The list has worked fine for many years with its somewhat more technical stance and I believe that this is beneficial to both experienced dyers and “baby” dyers. I belong to a number of Yahoo groups where photos are allowed and seldom take a look at those. I would rather see blog/web addresses in the signature line and go take a look if something interests me. There is a pretty good chance that once I am on that person’s blog or website I will find even more interesting things.

It would be nice, though, if more “Baby dyers” investigated the archives more thoroughly before asking questions that have been asked over and over again. Whenever I join a group, the first thing I look for are the archives and if the answer to my questions are not there, only then do I go to the list.

Pictures are necessary only when they are needed in addition to the words in order to understand the question or answer. Usually words are quite adequate to handle technical problems and answers. And for people who live in extreme climates, weather has a definite effect on dyeing.

I did not vote in your poll, but the Q&A are great. I get tired of people trying to sell their work, and I feel this is not what this list is about. Putting web site and blog in signature is enough, if someone wants to look more they can.
