New business cards

The latest book post is up!  This one is on the importance of staying flexible about your vision, letting it evolve rather than trying to define everything up front.  (It also has pictures of adorable little piggy dumplings, for the food nerds among us.)

It finally occurred to me – this morning! – that it would be nice to have some kind of handout for Creating Craft: A Guide to Designing Original Pieces at Complex Weavers Seminars.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to network – even if the person I’m talking to is already an experienced designer (quite likely at Complex  Weavers), they almost certainly know someone who is just stepping into design, or who would enjoy reading this book.  (It’s actually my hope that even advanced designers will get something out of the later chapters, which will be more technical than the chapters I’m writing now.)

Anyway, I spent about half an hour throwing together a business card, and here it is:

It’s based on the header image for the website, and while I’m sure I could do better with more time, I think it actually looks pretty good.  (The real card has my phone number on it, but I removed it before posting it on the Web, for obvious reasons.)

This card is really meant as an advertisement for the book – eventually I’ll develop my own author business card as well as my personal card (my, how they are proliferating!), but that will be after I get a professional headshot taken.  (Yes, that too is on the schedule.  I found a guy on Craigslist who specializes in headshots and has a fantastic portfolio, so I’m getting some shots taken the weekend after next.  Useful for all sorts of things.)

I’ve also revamped my Welcome page, added links from Ravelry, Facebook, and Twitter, and a bunch of other stuff that would be just too tedious to get into.  I’m trying to amp up my Ravelry presence since that is a huge social network full of people who might be interested in the book.  I’m starting to research SEO (search engine optimization) and am starting to dip my toesies into Twitter.  And I’ve written two more sections for the book – one on mistakes as an essential part of learning (that one goes up on Thursday) and one on starting-points for new work.  The last one needs substantial work (the topic actually spans five blog posts), but since I’m about two weeks ahead right now, I’ll have time to do the appropriate revisions.

Yes, I’ve been busy!

On the slate for later today is a long walk (got to do something after all that feasting!), a nice nap, and then maybe a bit more writing.  Complex Weavers Seminars starts tomorrow, and I expect it to be nonstop weaving talk, morning, noon, and night, so I want to make sure I’m well-rested and caught up on the book before diving into weaving!
