Luscious lace

Yesterday I went to Britex Fabrics in San Francisco, which is always a mistake, but I needed sewing needles and they have the best needles I’ve been able to find.

Why is it a mistake?  Because Britex also carries the most amazing, wonderful, and expensive! fabrics you can find anywhere.  And they were having a 30% off sale on virtually everything.

So I poked through the remnant bin, telling myself I wasn’t going to buy anything, which I wasn’t, until I got hit in the face by this:

I fell instantly in love with it.  (The photos REALLY don’t do it justice.)

The original price was a king’s ransom (in fact, I don’t think I’ve seen anything more expensive per-yard, even at Britex), but combined with the 50% remnant discount and the 30% on top of that, it was merely a minor nobility’s ransom, and as it was only 5/8 yard, actually somewhat within my reach.  So it jumped into my shopping basket and went home with me.  I have no clue what I’ll use it for, but am percolating some ideas.

(My favorite so far: a black poofy dress with handwoven black-and-gold patterns in the skirt, solid black in the bodice with the lace applied on top.  Of course, that would make the lace the central focus and distract from the handwoven fabric, but still….?  Would be gorgeous!)

that fabric is gorgeous. Great find. I can’t wait to see what it becomes in your most able hands.

that lace is absolutely amazing. looking forward to seeing what you finally decide to use it for.

so is “lace making” going to be a new technique to learn/ experiment with in your future? 🙂
